Bernkastel

Bernkastel (ベルンカステル Berunkasuteru) is an extremely powerful witch that has lived a thousand years.

Abilities[]

Bernkastel has long steel-blue hair and emotionless purple eyes. Her attire is that of a black and white Gothic Lolita dress with a blue ribbon, a white petticoat, cotton socks and black mary jane shoes. She seems to have a black cat tail with a blue ribbon tied on it. In the original visual novel, she is depicted as an individual around her teens, whereas in the remakes, she is depicted as a child, almost half Ronove's height.

Personality[]

Bernkastel initially appears emotionless and gets bored easily. She has forgotten the concept of pain and fear after centuries of being superior to others.

Deep down, Bern is sadistic and willing to kill or sacrifice anything or anyone for her own amusement. She treats her piece Erika like garbage when the latter fails to achieve any worthwhile results. She is just as, if not even more, playfully cruel than Lambdadelta, who shows a great fondness towards her and outright states that she loves her several times.

She has a tendency to hold grudges and that even a century won't make her forget the humiliation she suffered. As a result of this, she then creates a game where there won't be a happy ending, in the case when she lost a game to Beatrice.

Abilities[]

Bern can use "magic of miracles" to reset a bad situation, as long as the chance of it becoming favorable is not zero. She has experienced having been played with and imprisoned in a cruel fate in the past by Lambdadelta when she was a human being. Hence, it seems she can't ignore the fate of those in same circumstances. Her weapon is a long black scythe, which separates miracles from reality.

She possesses the ability to transform into a cat and to evoke an apparently infinite number of cat furniture, such as in Golden Fantasia with her move "Here Kitty Death lords" where Bern summons kitty death lords to fire beams at her opponent. She is also capable of combining her cat furniture to create the monstrosity known as the Leviathan, such as in Golden Fantasia with her move "The Heartless Leviathan that Consumes All" where Bern summons a giant snake to swallow the opponent.

She can also manipulate Fragments as weapons and transform them into defensive tools. During her battle against Lambdadelta in Twilight of the Golden Witch, the cohesion of her powers with those of the Witch of Certainty proved to be able to create and destroy entire narrative universes.

Frederica Bernkastel[]

Frederica

Frederica Bernkastel (フレデリカ・ベルンカステル Furederika Berunkasuteru) is the writer of poems that appear throughout the chapters of Higurashi When They Cry. She is a version of Rika Furude that resides in the Sea of Fragments.

Personality[]

Frederica is inferred to be the persona of Rika Furude who has aged mentally. She exhibits many psychological characteristics that are abnormal for a child of Rika's age, which she personally admits.

In emphasis, her speech pattern is different from that of Rika, which is more apparent in the original Japanese releases. For example, Frederica uses the pronoun "watashi" (私), a standard pronoun used by adults and young people who want to be taken seriously in social situations. Whereas, Rika uses "boku" (僕), which is a misuse of the pronoun and is a common behavior seen in young children of Rika's age who want to assert their individuality (see "bokukko"). Frederica speaks in a very mature tone using informal speech (口語 kougo), without any honorifics or the sort.

Frederica is rude, sardonic, and possesses a unique worldview after having lived over a hundred years and observing humans from a distance. She is cynical, melancholy and apathetic which is reflected in her poems. She doesn't mince words and is brutally straightforward to both herself and those around her. Even though she may arguably be Rika Furude, she is also not, and this dissociation from her human counterpart is what defines her existence.
