Surly Squirrel is the main protagonist of the film, The Nut Job, and sequel The Nut Job 2. In the beginning he was selfish, uncaring and an outcast, but soon he becomes a kinder, unselfish and heroic squirrel while trying to raid a nut store to survive the winter.

- He meets with his best friend Buddy during a hurricane and since then they have never left each other's side.
- He begins to fall in love with Andie in the first movie and by the end of the second movie his relationship with Andie blooms into a healthy boyfriend/girlfriend bond.
- It is implied that something tragic happened in his past after he met Buddy that caused him to become the selfish outcast he was in the first film before he became the hero the park eventually came to love.
