Nodoka Manabe is one of the main protagonists of the K-ON! series, she has been Yui Hirasawa's childhood friend since they met in preschool.
Bio[]
Yui Hirasawa's childhood friend and at first a member of the Sakuragaoka High School's student council until she becomes its president later.
Nodoka and Yui Hirasawa grew up in the same neighbourhood and first met in kindergarten when they were painting. Nodoka painted an apple and Yui, who thought the pen which drew the apple would be as delicious as the apple looked, tried to eat it which forced Nodoka to stop her. Both have been close friends since then. Coincidentally, they always attended the same school and class and Nodoka got in time used to help Yui anytime she needed to, despite all the trouble Yui caused her. Since Nodoka often visited Yui at home, she started becoming friends with Yui's younger sister Ui Hirasawa and also got along well with their mother and neighbour. Over time, Nodoka became the oldest sister of three silblings and constantly looked over the two. At some point, she started to wear glasses.
After graduating from Junior High School, she applied to the Sakuragaoka High School and was accepted.
Instantly after starting her high school career, Nodoka joined the school's student council.
After seeing that Yui, who was in her class again, still struggled with the choice of which club she should join, Nodoka told her that she might end up as a NEET at this rate. This encouraged Yui to try and find a club she can join but to no avail.
Later when going home together, Nodoka learns that Yui still hasn't joined any club at their high school despite trying her best to find one. The very next day, she does learn that Yui had decided to jon the the Light Music Club, reasoning that it is just about music. When she questions Yui if she knows how to play any instrument, the latter replies that she still knows how to play the castanets from kindegarten, with Nodoka showing her worry for her friend.
After class, Nodoka inquires her childhood friend Yui if she has chosen which club she wants to join. Yui answers that she still hasn't thought of which club to join, with Nodoka warning her that she may end up wasting her high school life doing nothing which concerns Yui. Thankfully, a couple of days later Yui decides to join the Light Music Club with Nodoka commenting that they could accept her on the topic that she know how to play an instrument.
Personality[]
Nodoka is a polite, smart and structured person, extraordinarily reliable and mature for her age. She is an assiduous and duteous girl, virtually the archetype of a successful student.
Nodoka is Yui's childhood friend and takes the part of the reliable person in their relationship in many ways. Since she has known Yui for so long, she knows about her shortcomings more than anyone else, besides Ui Hirasawa. Nodoka can be pretty strict on Yui and does not go easy on her when she makes mistakes or thinks for too long about a problem instead of solving it. This dry and sometimes cold side is however pretty useful since it is mostly the only way for Yui to understand the importance behind Nodoka's words. Nodoka sees Yui as a close friend despite all the trouble she gave her in the past, showing a forgiving and affectionate side. She values Yui's good sides highly and does all in her might to support them, always acting as a true friend.
Nodoka is very open-hearted in general, quickly befriending Mio Akiyama in their second year of high school, which saved the latter from enduring a whole year without knowing anybody in her class. Despite the fact that she is often troubled by the Light Music Club's president, Ritsu Tainaka, who constantly forgets to hand in important applications, Nodoka still forgives her every time and is also willing to deal with the mistake by herself, showing a remarkably selfless side. Even though the mistakes are quickly forgotten, the short outbursts of anger show that Nodoka can be quite scary when being enraged.
Nodoka is pretty ambitious and therefore usually successful in what she's doing. Her conscientiousness and dependability quickly brought her an important place within the school's student council, later becoming its president during her third year of high school. The council often benefits from her logical calculations and down-to-earth solutions. Her reliability, however, also brought her the role of the president of the Mio Akiyama Fan Club after Megumi Sokabe graduated, a role she had not originally intended to take up.
As the eldest of three siblings, Nodoka is very independent and prepares her own lunch for school, a fact that amazed Mio. On top of that, she is also a very skilled cook, having earned Yui's praise. She does not have any musical experience and is unexclusive when it comes to favourite music, listening to whatever everybody else is listening to, too. She is also very interested in travelling and wishes to leave Japan to visit famous historical places like Machu Piccu or exciting cities like London.
Nodoka is a very successful student and is especially good in math and science. Her athletic abilities are above average as well. Her weakest subjects are humanities.
Nodoka can be pretty unreasonable when she does not understand the issue. She can also get anxious about her future, as seen when she was uncertain if her choice of a university to attend in the future was the right one for her or when she was uncertain if she should study abroad or not. If she can't hold up the expectations placed on her, she is usually pretty conscience-stricken and needs the help of others to make up for it. She also appears to have a low sense of orientation in unknown areas, even with a map.
In contrast to her usual strict self, she sometimes shows rare signs of a more easygoing side, like when she states that an overnight stay inside of the school would be "fun". She also knows how to turn an awkward situation around so it's not as embarrassing for the other person anymore. Very rarely, she loses control and lets her emotions burst out, like after hearing about Yui's future plan to become a musician or after the Light Music Club learned about the student council's tradition to have a photo album for the line-up each year, which appears to be a bit embarrassing for Nodoka.
Appearance[]
Nodoka has medium length brown hair and brown eyes. She wears squarish, red, half-frame spectacles. As a Sakuragaoka High School student, she wears the uniform with white socks when being at school. Outside school, she is seen wearing plain casual look. She likes wearing jeans.
As a young child, she did not wear glasses.
Relationships[]
Yui Hirasawa[]
Nodoka and Yui Hirasawa have been friends since kindergarten. Due to this, they know everything about each other, with Nodoka being the responsible one and Yui the lazy one. They grew up together, being in the same class each year, and Nodoka became used to always being there for Yui. Despite Nodoka occasionally getting exasperated with Yui's behavior, Nodoka would always forgive her, showing Nodoka's unwavering affection for her friend.
Nodoka is very anxious to support Yui's good side; when the two first began high school, she encouraged Yui to join a club, which actually happened. She is very trustful of Yui when the latter needs to do something important, and Yui, with her perseverance, usually accomplishes her goals.
On the other hand, Nodoka is a bit envious of Yui's natural ability of taking life lightly and saw it as motivation for her own future planning.
Mio Akiyama[]
Nodoka and Mio Akiyama became good friends during their second year of high school as Mio was the only person Nodoka knew in her class. Mio was overjoyed (and Nodoka was, albeit to a lesser extent) to be in the same class as both knew no one else. Nodoka's and Mio's relations to Yui and Ritsu are very similar since both are the responsible one with regards to their respective close friend.
Nodoka is aware of Mio's popularity and often supports her, keeping the expectations placed in her alive.
Ritsu Tainaka[]
Nodoka is often annoyed by Ritsu Tainaka's constant problem of forgetting to hand in important documents for the Light Music Club. Over time, however, she gets used to it and begins to disregard Ritsu's forgetfulness. Nodoka is still fond of Ritsu despite her forgetfulness and is willing to shoulder her faults herself without hesitating.
