Queen Opaline Arcana is the main antagonist of the fifth generation of the My Little Pony franchise, serving as the unseen overarching antagonist of My Little Pony: A New Generation, the main antagonist of My Little Pony: Make Your Mark and the secondary antagonist of My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale, specifically as the main antagonist of the first season and a flashback antagonist in the second season. She lives in a castle to the northwest of Maretime Bay, and has a unicorn associate named Misty. In the dubbing credits of the special, she was credited as "Shadowy Alicorn".
Trivia[]
- Her minions are Kaa, Sir Hiss, Ushari, Flotsam and Jetsam, Lucius Malfoy and Maccus.
- She also became the love interest of the Dark Lord Sauron.
Powers and Abilities[]
Like other alicorns, Opaline is capable of very powerful magic, far more than any Unicorn. She can fly better than any Pegasus and has been shown to grow rare plants that even Earth Ponies can not bring forth alone. However, she is implied to have once been much stronger, and that her magic was 'compromised' likely in a battle against Twilight Sparkle. Since then, she has been confined to her Castle, determined to find the source of her lost power to become whole again.
Due to her magic, Opaline's lifespan is far longer than ordinary ponies as she has been alive since at least the reign of Twilight Sparkle (which was stated by Argyle to have been ten generations past). Her more traditional Canterlot accent may imply that she is even older. She's stated that she witnessed events that occurred hundreds of moons ago.
Despite her limitations, Opaline is still formidable with magic ability from her home in the Dark Castle. She has a magic projector which allows her to observe the rest of Equestria through a bird's eye view. She also has a magic cauldron which can do everything from create rare plants from nothing and even synthesize animal life. She is capable of bewitching many items such as ever-burning torches to light her Castle and mirrors to allow her to spy on her enemies and even communicate with them better than modern cell-phones. As a result, Opaline does not keep any semblance of modern technology in her castle, as she likely has no need for it.
Opaline is convinced that a number of sources could restore her full power. Key among them being Sunny's own alicorn magic, the Prisbeam magic of the Unity Crystals, as well as the magic inducted in Sparky's dragon fire. After obtaining a small breath of dragon fire, her magical power is shown to become greatly augmented. It's arguable that her obsession with magical attainment and exploration of dark arts has warped her personality to become cold, cruel and downright mad.
Even without her magic, Opaline is a force to be reconned with. She is intelligent and clever, devising a number of plans to chip away at Equestria's social fabric. She rarely ever engages directly with her enemies, allowing the havoc of her influence to proceed her. She prefers to know everything about a situation before making a definitive move. Despite yearning for attention and admiration, she concedes that working from the shadows is her best approach.
Though outwardly a bully, Opaline possesses something of a silver tongue, allowing her to manipulate, entice and coerce her opponents and subordinates. She is even a capable brawler, having knocked the relatively peaceful, but combat experienced Fluttershy to the ground without much effort.
