Plot[]

In the town of Del Mar, renowned hero and outlaw Puss in Boots is hosting a party when an earthen giant attacks them. Puss manages to subdue the giant but ends up getting crushed to death by a bell thereafter. Waking up in a local clinic, Puss is informed by a doctor that he has used up eight of his nine lives and suggests that he retire from adventuring. Puss initially refuses, but after meeting and losing a duel with a mysterious black-hooded wolf in a local pub that night who gashes his forehead, he fearfully retreats to the house of a local cat lady named Mama Luna and ceremoniously buries his attire in her garden.

As time passes, the crime family of Goldilocks and the Three Bears show up at Luna's residence in search of Puss, only to find his "grave." Puss overhears them speaking of the Wishing Star, a magical fallen star that can grant any single wish, with its map being delivered tonight to Jack Horner, a corrupt pastry chef and collector of magical artifacts. Seeing it as an opportunity to restore his lost lives, Puss breaks into Horner's bakery to steal the map; unexpectedly reuniting with his resentful ex-fiancée, Kitty Softpaws, who is also seeking the Wishing Star. After a brief skirmish with Goldilocks and Horner, Puss, Kitty, and a stray dog named Perrito, whom Puss met earlier from Luna's house, manages to escape with the map, with Goldilocks, the bears, and Horner and his henchmen in pursuit. While fleeing, Puss briefly spots the hooded wolf again.

The map leads the trio to the Dark Forest, a dimension which morphs into different landscapes depending on the map's holder; Puss and Kitty both receive similarly hellish settings, while Perrito receives a colourful and seemingly tranquil path ahead. During another skirmish with Horner's and Goldilocks' factions, Puss spots the hooded wolf again and flees, distracting Kitty and allowing Goldilocks to obtain the map. After Perrito calms him down, Puss reveals that he left Kitty at the altar on their wedding day, which he deeply regrets. Overhearing their conversation, Kitty reveals that she never attended the wedding either, feeling that she could never compete with someone who loves himself more than her.

Puss and Kitty reclaim the map from Goldilocks when her group gets distracted by a manifestation of their woodland cottage. As the landscape morphs, Perrito gets left behind and captured by Goldilocks while Puss inadvertently traps himself in a crystalline cave after touching the map, leaving Kitty to retrieve Perrito alone. While inside, Puss encounters crystal reflections of his past lives, who mock him for changing his attitude. The hooded wolf then appears and introduces himself as Death, revealing that he seeks to claim Puss's last life as retribution for squandering his previous ones. Panicked, Puss runs away with the map, an act which Kitty and Perrito witness from afar. Meanwhile, Goldilocks reveals that she wishes for a human family, devastating the bears who support her decision anyway.

Reaching the Wishing Star, Kitty berates Puss for his selfishness while also confessing her wish to meet somebody she could trust. Goldilocks, the bears, and Horner soon arrive, and another fight ensues, during which Goldilocks forfeits the map to save Baby Bear's life. At the same time, Kitty throws Horner into his own magical bottomless bag. Shortly after, Death also mounts the star and duels with Puss after trapping them both within a ring of hellfire. Puss manages to disarm the wolf and boldly declares that while he cannot truly defeat Death, he will never stop fighting for his last life. Seeing that Puss has lost his arrogance and finally accepted his mortality, Death begrudgingly spares him with the assurance that they will meet again.

A giant Horner re-emerges from his bag, having eaten a magic growth cookie, and seizes the map from Puss and Kitty. As Horner attempts to make a wish, Perrito distracts him long enough for Puss, Kitty, and Goldilocks to rip up the map to shreds, causing the Wishing Star to collapse and consume Horner. Accepting the bears as her family, Goldilocks sets out with them to take over Horner's bakery business, while Puss rekindles his love for Kitty, wanting to spend his last life with her. Days later, Puss, Kitty, and Perrito commandeer a stolen ship and sets sail to the kingdom of Far Far Away to meet "some old friends."
