Professor Birch is a Pokemon professor from the Hoenn region. He is responsible for giving starter Pokemon to beginner trainers who start their journey through Hoenn. The starter Pokemon he gives out are Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. In the anime, he gave Harrison and May a Torchic as a starter Pokemon.
