The Demons of Spooky Island are supporting antagonists in the 2002 live-action film Scooby-Doo. They are an ancient race of creatures who once inhabited an island that would later become a theme park known as Spooky Island, but soon came under the control of Scrappy-Doo through the Daemon Ritus as he planned to use the monsters in order to conquer the world and get revenge on his former friends Mystery Incorporated for abandoning him. The Demons also have a weakness which include getting disintegrated when exposed to sunlight and used human bodies as suits for protection while possessing them.
History[]
Early life[]
The demons once populated the island centuries before Emile Mondavarious would build Spooky Island hundreds of years later. Presumably, the island's inhabitants coexisted or were enslaved by the demons. Eventually when Mondavarious arrived, the inhabitants revolted and banished the demons. The island was built upon supernatural grounds, hence why souls could be removed from people's bodies and these creatures can exist. It is speculated the demons originally game from a demonic dimension, from a portal or a rift under the island. This would explain the demon coming out of the catacombs during the possession of Daphne Blake.
Scooby-Doo[]
Corrupted by the power of a pyramid shaped artifact known as the Dameon Ritus, Scrappy-Doo took control of the demons to conquer the world. He created a mechanical version of Spooky Island's creator and owner and arranged for Mystery Inc. to be brought there. For over two years, Scrappy had many college kids captured and possessed, with the final group nearly including Mystery Inc. members Velma Dinkley and Fred Jones, who were captured by demons, and so were Mondavarious (Scrappy) and a few others. Shaggy Rogers, Daphne, Mary Jane and Scooby-Doo all escape the hotel to witness large groups of demons dragging unconscious college kids behind them and into a cave where the Ring of Fire was conducted earlier when the gang first arrived. The next morning the rest of the gang wakes up to see the hotel fixed and the college kids having fun on the beach and by the pool. They all thought this was strange and so they investigated. Mary Jane left to find her friend Bethan and would later be possessed offscreen. Daphne walks into the band Sugar Ray performing on stage, surrounded by dancing teens. Suddenly the lead singer Mark McGrath's eyes began to glow green indicating he was possessed and so she ran away. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby find Fred acting strange and speaking in the 90s lingo. They all hear glass shattering as then Fred took off his sunglasses and two teens jumped up on a table nearby. They all roared, their eyes glowing green and releasing the same green fog-like breath at them, revealing not only was Fred possessed but everyone at the pool party and the beach were too. Daphne is captured by Zarkos, the masked wrestler and best friend to N'Goo Tuana. Shaggy and Scooby run away from the possessed teens, Fred and Sugar Ray. They escape on motorbikes when they run into Mary Jane, she hops on and they escape the other possessed humans. Along the way, Mary Jane is struck by a branch distorting her face and revealing she is possessed. She fixes it and pretends everything was okay despite Scooby witnessing the act. They arrived at the cave entrance where Scooby and Shaggy get into an argument and are separated. Shaggy pursues to save his best friend. Inside the cave, Shaggy witnesses Daphne captured and strapped to a bronze altar. Zarkos commands a pincer towards her chest where it phases through and slowly removes Daphne's soul from her body. Her soul is then dumped into a vat behind the pincer and a demon comes out of the catacombs below and possesses Daphne. She speaks in an ancient language of the demons and is released by some henchmen and all walk out of the cave. Shaggy mustering courage runs up to the vat to discover it is filled with tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of human souls. All appear like ghostly copies of their host's heads. Shaggy rescues Velma first, she explains that she can return to her body but Shaggy must escape preventing his soul removed as well. Velma returns to her body and the demon is expelled from her chest and explodes. Next Fred was rescued, during his flight returning to his body, the possessed Fred speaks of a ceremony called the "Darkpocalypse". Fred, unfortunately, does not recover his body as his possessed self goes into a bathroom and closes the door on him. Shaggy then briefly rescues a random soul of a college boy but puts him back, later rescuing Daphne's soul and setting her free. He then locks eyes with the Daemon Ritus and takes it, he never finds Mary Janes's soul. Velma then lures a possessed Daphne into a room where then a soul flies into her and knocks her back onto a chair. Velma closes the door and runs towards closed curtains as Daphne's demon is expelled. The demon in an attempt to capture Daphne again approaches her but Velma opens the curtains, letting sunlight inside. The demon develops glowing boils and subsequently explodes revealing their weakness; sunlight which is why they needed human bodies to protect them. Later it is revealed Fred is in Daphne's body and Daphne goes into Fred's body. The gang gathers in a forest where they switch bodies briefly before settling in their correct bodies. Much later the gang goes back to the cave to knock over the vat of souls to free everyone, reclaim their bodies and use the disco skull they retrieve to reflect sunlight at the expelled demons and destroy them. The Darkpocalypse Ritual begins with dozens of possessed humans walking into the cave, they start to chant and dance. Mondavarious walks in with a blue ceremonial robe with a crevasse mount on his chest. Velma and Fred are discovered by the possessed humans and are captured as well as the Daemon Ritus. Mondavarious then reveals Scooby-Doo is a sacrifice as henchmen carry Scooby into the ritual chamber. Scooby's soul is soon pulled out of his body and Mondavarious attaches the Daemon Ritus to his chest. The souls in the vat begin to rise up in a whirlpool and fly towards Mondavarious's chest, where he begins to absorb them for energy. Before Scooby's soul is absorbed, Shaggy thwarts Mondavarious, knocking him back and stopping him from absorbing more souls. Scooby returns to his body as Velma and Fred realize Mondavarious is wearing a mask. They remove it to reveal he is actually a robot. From the robot's chest springs Scrappy-Doo who begins to grow rapidly in size. He reveals his plan to Mystery Inc. as he continues to grow, stating he wanted to take over the world with his new army of possessed henchmen and demons, but to complete his transformation he needs the soul of Scooby. Scrappy transforming into his monster form, Scrappy-Rex. A fight breaks out between Mystery Inc. and the cultists. Eventually Shaggy discovers Mary Jane is possessed and Scooby is captured. Daphne defeats Zarkos as he is kicked into a vent causing sunlight to come inside the cave, he knocks over the vat, releasing all the trapped souls inside it. The souls return to their bodies and expel all the demons, Daphne then uses the skeleton head disco ball to reflect sunlight, destroying the demons. Scrappy was defeated shortly afterward when Shaggy removes the Daemon Ritus from his chest and released the remaining souls to return to their bodies.
Appearance[]
The demons stand about twice as tall as a normal human in which they have an extremely lean and emaciated appearance which contrasts with their great physical strength. Their skin is purplish-red in color while their eyes are bright green. They have dog-like faces, digitigrade legs, five-fingered hands equipped with large claws, a mouth filled with sharp teeth, black spots, three pairs of short horns adorning the head and a pair of very long rabbit-like ears.
Powers and Abilites[]
The demons were quite resilient, able to take punishment without much complaint. The most notable aspect of these creatures is their extreme vulnerability to sunlight, which causes their bodies to disintegrate in mere seconds. For this reason, they can only safely operate at night. They also have a green, smoke-like breath that could knock out victims for possession. However, it's possible for them to counter this weakness due to their ability to possess the bodies of other creatures, such as humans, thus allowing them to withstand the sun. They use a magical device known as the Daemon Ritus to extract the protoplasmic spirits from their potential hosts' bodies so that the demons can possess them, as they cannot do so otherwise.
When a demon possesses someone, the host's body will display the same powers that the demon had in its original form, such as superhuman strength and jumping ability. If the host's protoplasmic spirit manages to return to the body, the demon will be forcefully expelled and materialize in its original shape in from of its former host. This can be very bad for the creature if it happens during the day, as it might find itself directly under the sun with no means of protection.
Personality[]
Like any monster, the demons were easily duped and used brute strength to get things done. They served Scrappy-Doo loyally, even attending training sessions on learning how to behave like a teenager (with out-of-date lingo). They didn't attack any of the employees allied with Scrappy, showing they know who's really on their side.
