Stephen

Stephen, nicknamed "Stephenson's Rocket", is owned by Sir Robert Norramby and is one of the oldest engines on Sodor. is the second main protagonist in the movie, King of the Railway.

Stephen is one of the earliest engines ever built. Newer engines may be faster and stronger than Stephen, but what he lacks in terms of strength or speed, he makes up for with his positive spirit, sense of humour, and knowledge. He used to work at docks and in mines, but now works as a tour-guide at Ulfstead Castle. He can often be seen pulling an open-topped carriage and was trapped in the Ulfstead Mine where he discovered King Godred's long lost crown in time for the opening of the castle. In the seventeenth season, he gave Percy a lucky horseshoe when he was having bad luck, helped him trick James and took the Afternoon Tea Express.

Appearance[]

Stephen is painted golden yellow and black. He carries gold nameplates reading "Rocket" on each side of his boiler and his domes, whistle, exhaust pipes and boiler bands are painted bronze. He also has two small wheels at the back, and two big driving wheels at the front. During his early years and after his overhaul, Stephen had a plain black funnel, but after he was rescued from the mine, his funnel was painted white with a gold finial.

Prior to being overhauled, Stephen had unpainted woodwork with black wheels. Due to being abandoned for so long, he was covered in patches of rust, and his wood was rotting.

Personality[]

Stephen is a jolly old engine with a positive attitude and a good sense of humour. He is a good-hearted and quick-witted engine and will not take any nonsense from engines like Spencer or Diesel. Some of the smaller engines look up to him for advice and he is always willing to get the job done.

Trivia[]

Most merchandise lines show Stephen carrying the Ulfstead Castle crest on his tender, even though he only wore the crest during the castle's grand reopening. Not just that, some merchandise lines also depict him with his old black funnel due to it being molded onto the smokebox.
Bob Golding gives Stephen a Northern English accent, reflecting his basis' origins.
Stephen's name is likely derived from the last name of his builder, Robert Stephenson.
Originally, after his restoration, Stephen would have gained a cab. In fact, some merchandise prototypes depicted him with a cab.
His drive wheels have more spokes than that of the real Rocket's, whose drive wheels only have 12 spokes each.
Stephen appears to be going way slower than the top speed of his basis when it's said/implied that he is going as fast as he can.
He is Sam Wilkinson's favourite character.
Stephen will meet Winnie the Pooh, Ash Ketchum, Littlefoot, Simba, SpongeBob, Mickey Mouse, Tai, Princess Twilight Sparkle and their friends in Pooh's Adventures of Thomas & Friends: King of the Railway.
Tigger refers to him as "Stephen boy", which he likes that nickname a lot.
Stephen will make his first guest starring appearance in Thomas' Adventures series in Thomas the Tank Engine Gets Frozen.

Stephen, along with Melody and Vanellope von Schweetz, became a new member and helper of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. He is also one of the two mentors of the Cutie Mark Crusaders (the second mentor is Hiro).
