Question about characters being related

I have a question about this wiki. Everywhere I go, I see stuff claiming that characters are somehow related to one another, even though this would never happen at all. A great example is Christopher Robin having several dozen cousins across numerous unrelated franchises. My question is: why do people make up these weird cross-universe family trees? What is the point of them?
