Yui Hirasawa

Yui Hirasawa is the main protagonist of the K-ON! series, she plays the guitar like Azusa Nakano does, she also nicknamed her guitar "Geeta".

In The Fourth Round Rumble, she gets hugged by Ash's Muk due to its affection.

As of All Things Bright and Beautifly, Yui decided her goal is to become a Pokémon Coordinator much like May and Miki.

Personality[]

Always looking for fun, Yui is fearless; anxiety and stage fright are unknown to her. She likes everything cute and makes a lot of physical contact with others like holding hands or hugging. She also loves everything sweet, so she's energized by the sweets that Tsumugi brings and her physical constitution is such that she does not gain weight no matter how much she eats. She can't stand being hot or cold, so she spends the winter under the kotatsu and rolls around on the floor in the summer in front of the fan to keep cool. Yui is rather lazy, so her grades with the exception of fine arts are always on the verge of failing; sometimes she is the only person in her class who needs to retake a test, while other times she manages to avoid failing all of her subjects by a one point margin. She has an average figure. Yui lives in a family of four with her younger sister Ui and both parents. Her parents are a "lovey-dovey" couple and often go on trips together, leaving both daughters behind.

Having misunderstood that "light music" means "easy music" (like whistling), Yui joined the Light Music Club and picked up the guitar with absolutely no prior experience. She cannot do more than one thing at a time, but to make up for that she can be highly focused on a particular subject and once started, can advance quite rapidly. However, whenever she learns something, she tends to forget everything else. Yui is the type of person who doesn't read manuals and relies on her own intuition and self-taught approaches. She also does not remember any musical terminology. She possesses perfect pitch and is musically gifted, being able to tune her guitar without a tuner, but she does not appear to make the best of her ability. Yui is relatively determined and competitive, but at the same time she feels comfortable depending on the help of a few good friends like Ui, Nodoka, Mio and Azusa. She is also a bit of a scatterbrain, like the time that she forgot the notes from the strings of Geeta when playing them (when she had that cram exam, due to those X and Ys that she studied) as well as the lyrics when doing a concert in general.

Azusa Nakano[]

After watching the Light Music Club's performance during the freshman reception, Azusa thought of Yui as a very talented guitarist, eventually this thought led her to join the club. Soon, however, she regretted thinking highly of Yui and now thinks of her as a student who just likes to procrastinate.

Azusa admires Yui due to her certain abilities, such as her ability to go far due to sheer determination, her perfect pitch, and her affection towards her friends. Despite being better at guitar than Yui, she insists that Yui played the lead guitar due to her seniority (though in some songs, usually opening songs, Azusa plays the lead guitar instead). Before Azusa's first concert, Yui was sick and unlikely to be able to play. Azusa was the one who brought up the idea to cancel the concert, since it would not be good for anything if the whole band would not be present in her eyes. When Yui actually showed up, Mio told her to apologize to Azusa since she was the one who worried the most about her.

Ash Ketchum[]

In Brave the Wave!, she was angry (but in a scolding manner) with Ash for his cocky attitude and forcing his Treecko to overextend itself in battle.

She and Misty get along well, they share the gushing of cuteness and is revealed that Yui doesn't like Bug Pokemon because it freaks her out, but there is several Bug types she does like, such as Ledyba.

Huggy, Yui's Goodra[]

She and Huggy share a deep bond with one another when Huggy was still a Goomy, after she evolved into Sliggoo and then Goodra. Yui relies on her most of the time. When Yui tried to hug Azusa, Huggy would stop her from hugging Azusa by grabbing Yui with its antennae-like horns to pull her away, much to Yui's disappointment.

Ritsu Tainaka[]

Ritsu's first impression of Yui was that she was a clumsy, childish, and useless girl without tempo. But when Yui joined the Light Music Club, Ritsu stated that she misjudged her. Soon, they became really good friends. Yui and Ritsu have a lot in common, such as their lazy and laid-back attitudes. They also have a sweet tooth for Tsumugi's treats, and are frequently the first to propose a break during practice.

Yui usually thinks that Ritsu is in the same boat as her and got disappointed when she found out that Ritsu does well on her exams and takes good care of her drums.

Despite acting immature herself most of the time, Ritsu sometimes criticizes Yui's odd behavior or thoughts.

Mio Akiyama[]

Yui and Mio are often known for not being on the same side due to Mio's serious and mature personality often clashing with Yui's more carefree and childish personality. Yui tends to only want to play and consume tea and snacks instead of practicing, much to Mio's annoyance.

When Yui got her guitar, Mio taught Yui the basics of playing guitar and the basic guitar chords, though Yui complained that everything Mio taught her was too tough for a beginner like her.

Like many of Yui's friends, Mio is jealous of Yui's fast metabolism. Mio is very concerned about her figure and tries not to eat anything that will drastically increase her weight. On the other hand, Yui eats whatever she wants but never gains any weight, sometimes creating a rift between the two girls that Yui likely doesn't even realize exists.

Despite this, Yui has managed to impress Mio with her ability to learn things quickly. During their band's first concert, when Mio was supposed to sing but was suffering from stage fright, Yui told Mio that she believed in her and knew that Mio had been practicing the song. The other band members followed suit, and the performance was a success.

Mio has also shown admiration for Yui's ability to uplift the spirits of her friends and share her energy with those around her.

Tsumugi Kotobuki[]

Tsumugi first met Yui in the Light Music Club's room and immediately proceeded to spoil Yui with sweets and drinks so that Yui would be interested in joining the club. After joining, Tsumugi has helped Yui out on multiple occasions with financial concerns, such as lowering the cost of a guitar that Yui wanted to buy. Since both Yui and Tsumugi are known for their friendliness, they have few problems getting along. Tsumugi also goes along with Yui's antics more easily than Mio and Azusa do, often swaying the majority of club opinion towards slacking off when the club needs to decide between practicing or goofing around.

Yui has always loved Tsumugi's cakes and is usually the first to complain when snack time is put off for any reason. It is said that, without Tsumugi's snacks, she would not be able to play the guitar properly.

Like Mio, Tsumugi is very concerned about her weight, and will get very annoyed when Yui talks about her fast metabolism.

Ui Hirasawa[]

Ui is Yui's younger sister. But instead Ui acts more like the "older sister" of Yui, since she is more responsible and mature and takes care of her older sister. Yui is quite happy to be able to have Ui as a sister and loves her very much. This is proven when she decides to make a meal for Ui when she got sick taking care of her despite her lack of cooking skills compared to Ui. Yui even dedicates one of the very first songs that she writes to Ui.

Nodoka Manabe[]

Yui and Nodoka are very close friends. They have known each other since kindergarten and have been friends since then. They shared the same classes up through high school, with Nodoka more or less assuming the role of Yui's guardian at school to keep her on track and make sure she was keeping up with her classes. Though some of Yui's actions exasperate Nodoka to an extent, Yui actually cares deeply about her friend and has proven herself on multiple occasions to be a good friend to Nodoka.

Though Nodoka is glad that Yui is growing up and becoming more independent as a result of the Light Music Club, she's a bit saddened that Yui doesn't need her as much as she used to. However, the two can still often be seen together when Yui isn't with the rest of the Light Music Club members.

Being an absolute beginner in music and playing guitar Yui was trained by Sawako. Sawako's training was useful but in the process Yui ended up losing her voice and was unable to be on vocals at her first school festival. However they share a close student-teacher relationship

In The Joy of Water Pokémon!, she appears to have bonded with Dora after she told her about how she learned how to speak Spanish, Yui even tried to speak Spanish herself but failed, Dora reassures her that it takes time to learn to speak Spanish for the first time. She also told her about her monkey friend, Boots, her best friend.

She admires Dora for her optimism and positive vibes, Dora would often cheer her up whenever Yui felt down in the dumps if she forgets something, she explained to Yui that she heard it it all from Ui.
